Description
Calamox Injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic containing amoxicillin (a penicillin-type antibiotic) and clavulanic acid (a β-lactamase inhibitor). The addition of clavulanic acid helps prevent bacterial resistance by inhibiting β-lactamase enzymes, making the combination more effective against resistant strains. It is widely used in the treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections.

Adults & adolescents (≥40 kg): 1.2 g every 8 hours by IV or IM injection. In severe infections, may be given every 6 hours.
-
Children (≤40 kg): dose is usually 30 mg/kg every 8 hours (based on amoxicillin component).
-
Renal impairment: dose adjustments required.
-
Administer for the shortest effective duration as advised by the doctor.
In Case of Overdose
-
Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, imbalance of fluids/electrolytes, seizures (rare).
-
Management: supportive care, correction of fluid balance, and hemodialysis if necessary (drug is dialyzable).
Missed Dose
-
If a dose is missed (in hospital), it should be given as soon as possible.
-
Do not double the next dose to make up for a missed one.
How To Use
-
Reconstitute the vial with recommended diluent (sterile water for injection or compatible IV fluid).
-
Administer slowly by IV injection or infusion, or deep IM injection.
-
Always use aseptic precautions.
-
Discard unused solution after recommended stability period.
When Not to Use (Contraindications)
-
Hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, or β-lactam antibiotics
-
History of severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to β-lactams
-
History of jaundice or liver dysfunction associated with previous amoxicillin/clavulanic acid use
Side Effects
Common:
-
Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
-
Local pain, swelling at injection site
-
Rash, itching
Uncommon / rare:
-
Liver enzyme elevation, jaundice
-
Allergic reactions (urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis)
-
Clostridioides difficile–associated diarrhea (serious, requires medical attention)
-
Blood disorders (thrombocytopenia, anemia, leukopenia)
Precautions & Warnings
-
Monitor liver and kidney function during prolonged therapy
-
Use cautiously in patients with renal impairment or hepatic dysfunction
-
Risk of superinfection with prolonged use
-
Patients with history of allergy (asthma, hay fever, drug allergies) are at higher risk of hypersensitivity
-
Avoid unnecessary use to reduce risk of antibiotic resistance
Drug Interactions
-
Allopurinol: may increase risk of rash
-
Oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin): enhanced effect, monitor INR
-
Methotrexate: toxicity risk increased (reduced clearance)
-
Other antibiotics (e.g., tetracyclines, macrolides): may interfere with effectiveness
-
Probenecid: increases blood levels of amoxicillin
Storage / Disposal
-
Store in a cool, dry place, below 25°C, in original packaging
-
Protect from light and moisture
-
After reconstitution: use immediately or within the time specified by manufacturer
-
Dispose of unused vials as per hospital/clinic biomedical waste protocols

Quick Tips
-
Calamox covers more resistant bacteria than plain amoxicillin, thanks to clavulanic acid
-
Complete the full antibiotic course, even if symptoms improve early
-
Report persistent diarrhea or signs of liver problems immediately
-
Not suitable for self-injection; must be given under medical supervision
-
Inform your doctor if you are on anticoagulants or methotrexate
