Description:

Bonviva 150mg Tablet contains Ibandronic Acid, a bisphosphonate used to prevent and treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and individuals at risk of bone fractures.

It works by slowing down bone loss, increasing bone density, and reducing the risk of fractures, particularly in the spine, hips, and wrists.

Bonviva helps maintain strong, healthy bones by preventing calcium loss from the bones, making it an essential part of long-term osteoporosis management.


Ingredients:

Each tablet contains:

  • Ibandronic Acid (Ibandronate Sodium Monohydrate) – 150 mg

Inactive ingredients: Lactose monohydrate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, crospovidone, stearic acid, and other excipients.


Drug Class:

  • Bisphosphonate / Anti-osteoporotic agent

Uses:

Bonviva 150mg Tablet is used for:

  • Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women

  • Prevention of bone fractures due to bone weakness

  • Maintenance of bone mass in women receiving long-term corticosteroid therapy

  • Treatment of bone loss associated with aging or hormonal changes


Dosage:

  • Adults (Postmenopausal women):

    • One 150 mg tablet once a month (every 30 days).

    • Take on the same date each month, ideally in the morning.

  • Children: Not recommended.

  • Always take as prescribed by your healthcare provider.


In Case of Overdose:

Symptoms may include:

  • Low calcium levels (muscle cramps, tingling sensations)

  • Heartburn, nausea, vomiting, or stomach pain

Missed Dose:

  • If you miss a dose, take it the next morning after you remember, provided your next scheduled dose is more than 7 days away.

  • If your next dose is due within a week, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

  • Do not take two tablets in the same week.


How to Use:

⚠️ Bonviva must be taken correctly to avoid stomach and esophagus irritation:

  1. Take the tablet first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything (except water).

  2. Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass (200 mL) of plain water.

  3. Do not lie down, eat, drink (other than water), or take other medicines for at least 60 minutes after taking it.

  4. Take it on the same day each month for best results.


When Not to Use:

Do not use Bonviva if you:

  • Are allergic to ibandronic acid or any ingredient in the formulation.

  • Have low blood calcium (hypocalcemia).

  • Have esophageal disorders (e.g., stricture, achalasia) that delay emptying of the esophagus.

  • Cannot sit or stand upright for at least 1 hour after taking the tablet.

  • Have severe kidney disease (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min).


Side Effects:

Common side effects:

  • Headache

  • Stomach pain or indigestion

  • Heartburn or nausea

  • Muscle, joint, or bone pain

  • Flu-like symptoms (especially after the first dose)

Serious side effects (seek immediate help):

  • Difficulty swallowing or chest pain

  • Jaw pain or swelling (osteonecrosis of the jaw)

  • Unusual thigh pain (possible femur fracture)

  • Eye inflammation (pain, redness, vision changes)

  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulty)


Precautions & Warnings:

  • Ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake during therapy.

  • Avoid lying down or eating immediately after taking the tablet.

  • Use with caution if you have kidney disease, GI disorders, or dental problems.

  • Inform your dentist before dental surgery — rare cases of jawbone damage can occur.

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.


Drug Interactions:

Bonviva may interact with:

  • Calcium, iron, or magnesium supplements – reduce absorption (take at least 6 hours apart)

  • Antacids or multivitamins – delay absorption

  • Aspirin or NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Naproxen) – may increase stomach irritation

  • Aminoglycoside antibiotics – may increase risk of low calcium levels


Storage/Disposal:

  • Store below 30°C, in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Do not store in the bathroom or humid areas.

  • Dispose of expired tablets properly — do not flush down the toilet.
