Grasil Injection contains Amikacin Sulfate 500mg/2ml, an aminoglycoside antibiotic used for the treatment of serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible Gram-negative organisms and some Gram-positive bacteria. It is typically reserved for infections that are resistant to other antibiotics.
Active ingredient: Amikacin sulfate 500mg per 2ml
Excipients: Sodium bisulfite, sodium citrate, sulfuric acid (for pH adjustment), and water for injection
Aminoglycoside antibiotic
Sterile solution for intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection
Severe Gram-negative bacterial infections (e.g., Pseudomonas, E. coli, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Proteus)
Infections of:
Respiratory tract
Urinary tract
Intra-abdominal area (including peritonitis)
Skin and soft tissues
Bones and joints
Septicemia (bloodstream infections)
Meningitis (as part of combination therapy)
Used when bacteria are resistant to other aminoglycosides or antibiotics
Adults: 15 mg/kg/day in 2–3 divided doses IM or IV
Children: 15–20 mg/kg/day in 2–3 divided doses
Neonates: 10 mg/kg loading dose, then 7.5 mg/kg every 12 hours
Duration: 7–10 days (as directed by physician)
Dosage adjusted for renal impairment
Symptoms: Hearing loss, dizziness, balance problems, kidney impairment, respiratory paralysis (rare)
Management: Stop drug immediately, provide supportive treatment, consider hemodialysis in severe cases
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible under medical advice
Do not double dose — continue with the next scheduled dose
Given by intramuscular injection or slow intravenous infusion (30–60 minutes)
Should only be administered by trained healthcare professionals
Adequate hydration is recommended during therapy
Hypersensitivity to amikacin or other aminoglycosides
Patients with severe renal impairment (unless dose is adjusted)
Pregnancy (unless benefits outweigh risks — risk of fetal harm)
History of ototoxicity or neuromuscular disorders (e.g., myasthenia gravis)
Common:
Pain at injection site
Nausea, vomiting
Mild headache, dizziness
Serious:
Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage)
Ototoxicity (hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo)
Neuromuscular blockade → respiratory paralysis (rare)
Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)
Regular monitoring of kidney function (serum creatinine) and hearing tests during prolonged therapy
Use with caution in elderly patients and those with pre-existing renal disease
Maintain adequate hydration to minimize toxicity risk
Use cautiously with other nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs (e.g., furosemide, cisplatin, vancomycin)
Nephrotoxic drugs: Amphotericin B, vancomycin, cisplatin — ↑ kidney damage risk
Ototoxic drugs: Loop diuretics (furosemide, ethacrynic acid) — ↑ risk of hearing loss
Neuromuscular blockers: Additive muscle relaxant effect → respiratory issues
Other aminoglycosides: Avoid combination due to cumulative toxicity
