Kanacyn (0.5g/2ml) Injection contains Kanamycin sulfate, an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial infections. It is effective against gram-negative and certain gram-positive bacteria. It is often reserved for serious infections when other antibiotics are ineffective or contraindicated.
Active Ingredient: Kanamycin Sulfate (500 mg per 2 ml vial)
Excipients: Sterile water for injection and stabilizers (varies by manufacturer)
Aminoglycoside Antibiotic
Injection (Intramuscular [IM] or Intravenous [IV])
Severe bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms
Tuberculosis (in combination with other anti-TB drugs)
Infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, bone, joints, and skin
Septicemia, peritonitis, meningitis (as per specialist advice)
⚠️ Dosage is individualized based on severity of infection, patient’s age, weight, and kidney function.
Adults: Usually 15 mg/kg/day IM/IV in 2–3 divided doses (not exceeding 1.5 g/day).
Children: 15–30 mg/kg/day in 2–3 divided doses.
Tuberculosis (TB): 15 mg/kg IM once daily, often with other anti-TB agents.
Symptoms: Hearing loss, dizziness, kidney damage, muscle weakness, breathing difficulty.
Management: Discontinue drug immediately, provide supportive treatment, monitor renal and auditory function, consider hemodialysis in severe toxicity.
Take the missed dose as soon as remembered.
If it is close to the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose.
Do not double the dose to compensate.
Administered via intramuscular injection or slow intravenous infusion.
Must be given by a healthcare professional only.
Dosage must be adjusted in patients with kidney impairment.
Known hypersensitivity to kanamycin or other aminoglycosides
Pre-existing hearing loss or vestibular dysfunction
Severe renal impairment (unless benefits outweigh risks)
During pregnancy (risk of fetal harm)
Concurrent use with other ototoxic or nephrotoxic drugs (unless absolutely necessary)
Common:
Injection site pain
Nausea, vomiting
Headache, fever
Serious:
Ototoxicity (hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo)
Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage)
Neuromuscular blockade (rare)
Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing)
Monitor kidney function (serum creatinine, BUN) during treatment
Regular hearing tests are recommended in long-term therapy
Use cautiously in elderly patients and those with pre-existing renal impairment
Avoid concurrent use with other aminoglycosides, vancomycin, amphotericin B, or loop diuretics (e.g., furosemide) due to increased toxicity
Use with caution in neuromuscular disorders (e.g., myasthenia gravis)
Other aminoglycosides (gentamicin, streptomycin) → increased ototoxicity/nephrotoxicity
Loop diuretics (furosemide, ethacrynic acid) → enhanced hearing damage
Amphotericin B, cyclosporine, cisplatin, vancomycin → higher risk of kidney injury
Neuromuscular blockers → enhanced muscle paralysis
