Description

Tanzo Injection (2.25g/10ml) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic combination of Piperacillin (a penicillin-type antibiotic) and Tazobactam (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). Together, they work by killing bacteria and preventing them from developing resistance. Tanzo is used in the treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections, especially those caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.


Ingredients

  • Active ingredients:

    • Piperacillin 2g

    • Tazobactam 0.25g

  • Excipients: Sodium citrate, EDTA, sterile water for reconstitution (may vary by manufacturer)

Uses / Indications

Tanzo is indicated for treatment of:

  • Intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, abscesses)

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • Septicemia and bloodstream infections

  • Gynecological infections

  • Bone and joint infections

  • Empirical therapy in neutropenic patients with fever


Dosage

  • Adults: 2.25–4.5g every 6–8 hours IV, depending on severity of infection

  • Children (>2 months): 90mg/kg (piperacillin 80mg + tazobactam 10mg) every 6–8 hours IV

  • Maximum daily dose: 18g piperacillin + 2.25g tazobactam

  • Renal impairment: Dose adjustment required

  • Always follow physician’s prescription


In Case of Overdose

  • Symptoms: Seizures, confusion, electrolyte imbalance, kidney impairment

  • Management: Stop medication, supportive treatment, hemodialysis may help remove excess drug


Missed Dose

  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible under medical advice

  • Do not double dose; continue with the next scheduled dose


How To Use

  • Administered by intravenous injection or infusion over 30 minutes

  • Must be given by trained healthcare professionals

  • Reconstitute powder with sterile water before use


When Not to Use / Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, or beta-lactamase inhibitors

  • History of severe allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis) to antibiotics

  • Patients with significant liver dysfunction (use with caution)


Side Effects

Common:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  • Rash, itching

  • Pain or irritation at injection site

Serious:

  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)

  • Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhea

  • Liver enzyme elevation, jaundice

  • Seizures (rare, especially in overdose or renal impairment)

  • Low blood counts (anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia)


Precautions & Warnings

  • Use cautiously in patients with kidney or liver impairment

  • Monitor renal function, liver enzymes, and complete blood count during prolonged therapy

  • Can cause serious allergic reactions — discontinue immediately if rash or breathing difficulty occurs

  • May reduce effectiveness of oral contraceptives — use alternative protection

  • Not recommended in viral infections (like flu or common cold)


Drug Interactions

  • Probenecid: Prolongs drug levels in the body

  • Methotrexate: Increases risk of toxicity

  • Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin): May increase bleeding risk

  • Aminoglycosides: May inactivate each other if mixed in the same solution (should be administered separately)

  • Vancomycin: May increase kidney toxicity risk


Storage / Disposal

  • Store below 25°C in a dry place

  • Protect from light and moisture

  • Use immediately after reconstitution or within recommended stability period

  • Keep out of reach of children

  • Discard unused solution as per hospital protocol
